Yet approximately every 10 years, rains flood into dried-up riverbeds and head inland to create the largest lake in Australia, and 100,000 pelicans -- a third of all the pelicans in Australia -- arrive for the event. In this investigation, correspondent Lowell Bergman gains access to Sonny Vaccaro, a former marketing executive at Nike, Adidas and Reebok who helped bring about the rapid commercialization of college basketball.

Vaccaro's success made coaches, administrators, and companies rich. But the players remain at the mercy of the NCAA, which, despite a new $10.8 billion contract for its basketball tournament, has continued to insist that the athletes don't get paid. Now, Vaccaro has left the business world and he's spearheading a class-action lawsuit that aims to ensure that players get a piece of the action. Repeats this month are College, Inc. (March 1) and The Suicide Tourist (March 22).

INDEPENDENT LENS
Airs March 1, 22 and 29, at 10:00 p.m. MT/PT
See it in HD at 8:00/7:00and 11:00/10:00 p.m. MT/PT

The documentary film series continues its ninth season this month, shining the spotlight on three women who have faced adversity and have struggled to overcome devastating losses.

Me Facing Life: Cyntoia's Story (March 1) is the tale of Cyntoia Brown, who in 2004 is 16 years old and arrested for murder. There is no question that a 43-year-old man is dead and that she killed him. What mystified filmmaker Daniel Birman was just how common violence among youth is, and just how rarely we stop to question our assumptions about it. He wonders in this case what led a girl -- who grew up in a reasonable home environment -- to this tragic end? Without attempting to excuse her crime as youthful indiscretion nor to vilify her as an example of a generation gone off the rails, Birman simply follows Cyntoia through six years of her life after the crime and searches for answers to persistent questions.

Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai (March 22) follows Nobel Peace prize laureate Maathai in her quest to reclaim her land and her culture through the disarmingly simple act of planting trees. This direct action has fostered community solidarity, environmental literacy and political resolve that helped to bring down Kenya's 24-year dictatorship.

Pushing the Elephant (March 29) tells the story of Rose, who is separated from her 5-year-old daughter Nangabire in their Congolese village during her nation's civil war. Rose manages to escape with nine of her 10 children and eventually resettles in Phoenix, Arizona. More than a decade later, mother and daughter are reunited in the U.S. where they must come to terms with the past and build a new future.

D4K
Urban Wildlife
Airs Tuesday, March 15, at 2:00/1:00 p.m. MT/PT

Wild animals make their homes in lots of places, maybe even in your own backyard. On this month's D4K, host Joan Cartan-Hansen and her guests discuss Urban Wildlife, and how these animals live -- and sometimes thrive -- inside a city or town.

Two wildlife experts with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game -- wildlife educator Adare Evans and Upper Snake River regional conservation educator Gregg Losinski -- join Cartan-Hansen.

They discuss what can sometimes go wrong when untamed creatures such as deer and raccoons share space with humans in an urban setting. They also examine how humans can safely coexist with animals that live in the same vicinity.

Students can watch the show over the air or on the D4K Web site. They can send questions through email to D4K@idahoptv.org, fax them in before the show to (208) 373-7245, or call in live during the program to (800) 973-9800. Shortly after the show, students can view a Web-only video with Evans and Losinski answering questions that were not part of the on-air broadcast.

RON'S PICKS
New Seasons of Popular Dramas Debut Next Month
By Ron Pisaneschi, Director of Content

Next month we debut new seasons of some of our most popular British dramas and mysteries.

The residents of LARK RISE TO CANDLEFORD return in a new series of this warm-hearted and award-winning adaptation of Flora Thompson's novels. Set at the end of the 19th century, this visually stunning drama sees newcomer Gabriel Cochrane arrive in Candleford. Cochrane has a vendetta against the evil banker Steerforth, who he feels has tricked him into losing his business. Elsewhere, Dorcas makes an ill-judged intervention; Minnie becomes worried that Alfie might fall out of love with her; and Emma is left in a precarious financial position. The series moves from Wednesdays to Tuesday nights at 7:00 p.m. beginning April 5.

The BBC's popular drama NEW TRICKS is back with more sublime character acting, strong storylines, sharp dialogue and unsolved murders to keep viewers amused and guessing. Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman's unconventional team of ex-detectives -- Jack Halford, Brian Lane and Gerry Standing -- are eccentric, bend the rules, ignore procedure, follow their hunches and take risks. But they get results. Among the cold crimes they crack in Series 7 are the death of a boxer, the murder of a celebrated graffiti artist, the stabbing of a fashion designer, and the suspicious suicide of a college professor. As usual, there are plot twists and red herrings galore, plus a bewildering number of suspects played by well-known guest stars.

The BAFTA-winning drama MI5 returns for a ninth season with new characters to shake things up as the agents of Section D are, once again, left wondering who can really be trusted. There's Beth Bailey, ex-mercenary, brilliant and opinionated, but with a somewhat murky past; Dimitri, a former officer in British Special Forces, recruited for his skills in fighting terrorism; and young data analyst Tariq, who's been fast-tracked through the system. Friendships are tested to the limit, Harry and Ruth's bond intensifies and the depth of deceit leads to the ultimate game of cat and mouse.

Back for a third season, MIDSOMER MURDERS has become an international phenomenon. The rural countryside of a fictional county in England provides the backdrop for this crime series based on the novels of Caroline Graham. A lush visual style, quirky characters, and ubiquitous red herrings recall classic public television British mysteries of the past. At the center of the MIDSOMER MURDERS investigations is Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby, played by actor John Nettles.

And those are my picks for next month.

Director of Communications Director Sandy Streiff Retires

Sandy Streiff, former director of communications for Idaho Public Television, recently retired. Streiff arrived at KAID, Channel 4, in 1971, within months of the station's sign-on, as a member of the art department. She helped build sets, made on-air signs, designed type and graphics for printers and advertising, and handled graphics needs for advertising.

Streiff left Idaho Public Television in 1981 for other graphics positions, coming back to public television in 1991 -- again in the art department, where she became art director and then director of communications a few years later. She oversaw print graphics and printing jobs; Channels magazine; set design; advertising; and Web development, maintenance and design. Everyone at Idaho Public Television wishes her well in her future adventures.
