Doug Tims

An outfitter on the Selway River, Doug Tims and his customers rely on clear waters and thriving wildlife habitat. During the 2007 fire season, both his property and his business were threatened by wildfire. He discusses the massive impact that wildfires have on the outfitting industry, as well as the changes outfitters hope to see in wildfire policy.

On outfitting in Idaho:
“The lifeblood of outfitting and guiding in Idaho is clean, free-flowing streams, and quality wildlife habitat. When we have these frequent high-intensity fires, it impacts our customers’ ability to go out and experience that, and that has a negative economic impact on the industry when people can’t come out.”

On fire policy:
“We’ve been supportive of the policy that allows these fires to burn, but our current concern is with the increased frequency with high intensity fires. How long is this going to go on, how long are we going to be able to sustain this impact?”
