Named after Fred and Daisey Tappan, who ranched a mile up river from here, Tappan Falls has exhilarated and exasperated more than its share of boaters. At low flows, it can be particularly difficult.

Tappan Falls is usually a Class III rapid, meaning it is moderately challenging to the experienced boater. But at times it can be a Class IV rapid, very difficult with a likelihood of injury or loss of equipment.

It's always fun to scout this rapid, because one can stand right next to the big wave that could flip your boat. Such familiarity with a rapid helps to get the adrenaline flowing.
