IDAHO PUBLIC TELEVISION WORKSHOPS
Workshop Schedule
VIEW-DO-READ
Learn to write a video/book/activity thematic lesson plan. Fun activities
reinforce the VIEW-DO-READ triangle of television + books + activities.
We'll build a volcano and a tall paper tower that children from 3 to 93
can create and enjoy. You'll even get a free children's book and a video
that you can use with the activity the very next day!
TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR TELEVISION!
Language to Literacy brings exciting news about how you can support you
child's language development right from birth! In this workshop we will
explore developmental milestones of language development with fun activities
and ideas to help reinforce the learning at each age and stage. When you
child recognizes the McDonald's sign or "scribbles" a letter
to Granny, she is taking a giant step on the road to literacy. A discussion
of "The Literate Home" includes tips on how to encourage these
and other important activities. We'll talk about how television fits into
the picture and how to make it a positive influence in your home. Materials
and handouts are available in both English and Spanish.
ANGER CONTROL
Each person on this planet is unique and special! As children begin to
notice differences in people, they need help to understand and appreciate
those differences. Learn how to help children gain a strong, positive
self-concept as well as to respect and interact comfortably with people
different from themselves. We will identify key aspects of a child's identity
--- race, ethnicity and "abilities" and have FUN in the process!
RAISING READERS
Join us for a fun interactive workshop filled with tips and techniques
for promoting children's literacy and language development from birth
through elementary school. You'll also learn how to make television a
learning tool, and use it as a springboard to reading for the reluctant
reader. Plus--you'll get a free children's book and other resources.
STORYTELLING- A
STEP ON THE ROAD TO LITERACY
A family workshop
Storytelling is a fun, intimate, and rewarding way to share your family's
history. It's also an important skill for a young child as they take important
steps toward independent reading. You'll learn how to recognize and nurture
the stages children go through in developing their storytelling skills,
and eventually their reading skills. Fun activities you can do with your
children enhance this interactive workshop.
USING TELEVISION TO TEACH
For teachers, any level
Learn about how television affects our children and how to turn it into
the most powerful teaching tool at your disposal. Learn new methodologies
for appropriate use of television in the classroom. Using short segments
of video interactively and integrated into lesson plans has been shown
to increase student learning and retention up to 400%. Put the power of
video to work for your students!
